What Is the Financial Wellness Course?

Financial Wellness is a professional development course that empowers educators to guide students in building healthy financial habits. Designed for teachers, counselors and school leaders, the course explores financial literacy education topics, including money management skills for students like budgeting, saving, credit use and responsible spending.

Participants learn to integrate financial literacy into their curriculum, helping students develop real-world skills that support lifelong financial stability. The course also focuses on decision-making, goal-setting and understanding the emotional side of money. With these tools, educators can prepare students to make informed financial choices and develop the confidence to manage their money wisely, now and in the future.

What Will You Learn? 

The Financial Wellness course covers a variety of topics related to financial literacy education. Classroom teachers learn how to make financial literacy for students part of their curriculum. Those who complete the course will know how to:

  • List and explain the baby steps for financial wellness and the three basic reasons for saving money.
  • Calculate the power of compound interest and describe the impact of rate of return.
  • List and describe reasons why people do not create or follow a budget and common problems associated with budget failures.
  • Design and apply a zero-based budget based on income and expenses.
  • Describe reasons for avoiding debt and demonstrate how to reduce debt by applying the debt snowball.
  • Compare and contrast credit cards and debit cards.
  • Integrate healthy communication about money with parents, roommates and friends.

What Are the Assignments and Projects?

Students can enroll in the Financial Wellness courses at any time and take up to one year from the registration date to complete all assignments. Modules within the course include:

  • Analysis and Application Paper
  • Financial Wellness Learning Activities
  • Financial Wellness Action Plan
  • Financial Wellness Unit Plan
  • Financial Wellness Lesson Plan Reflection 
  • Financial Wellness Peer Interview
