People often feel intimidated by the wilderness. Unique training is required to successfully provide for our needs without the aid of modern conveniences. Yet, the wilderness invites us to enjoy a lifetime of challenge, rest, and rejuvenation within its boundaries. This course is designed to equip teachers to teach students how to 'maintain meaningful physical activity throughout their lifetimes' by engaging in wilderness adventures.

Learn how to equip students 'to make a successful transition from the physical education instructional program (at your school) to participation in physical (adventure) activity during adulthood.' This course will teach the skills needed to enjoy wilderness travel and to thrive in this unfamiliar environment. Thorough coverage of the CA Physical Education standards for Adventure/Outdoor Activities will enable you to teach students the skills of adaptation, risk management, and leadership required to enter the wilderness prepared to gain a valuable, life-enhancing experience.

This course is applicable towards the Physical Education Teaching Certificate.

I am drawn to teaching through my own desire to learn and grow. I believe that our potential as individuals is larger than we can imagine on our own. We all need others to show us what we don’t already know, to encourage us to try new things and to master those things we enjoy doing the most. I endeavored to inspire my middle school science students, and colleagues, with this outlook for thirty-two years. During this same time, I spent my summers leading expeditionary wilderness outings, challenging and supporting participants of all ages in their own spiritual and emotional growth. I believe that we are most alive while we are learning.
