What Is the Picture Book Power (PreK-3) Course?

Picture Power Book (PreK-3) is an online professional development course that helps educators harness the power of picture books to support early childhood literacy development and student engagement. Picture books and children’s literature offer rich opportunities for building reading skills, fostering comprehension and creating meaningful connections to text.

In this course, teachers explore a wide variety of picture books and discover how to use them as the foundation for effective language and literacy development. It’s designed to empower teachers with the skills they need to put the awesome power of picture books to use in the classroom.

 

What Will You Learn? 

The Picture Book Power professional development course covers a variety of topics related to language and literature development in early childhood settings. The coursework aligns with National Council of Teachers of English standards. Teachers who complete the course know how to:

  • Explain and reflect upon the role of picture books in the elementary classroom, including the possibilities for teaching Common Core Standard Standards (CCSS) using picture books as a central part of the core curriculum.
  • Create lesson plans that engage students and employ differentiated instruction to meet the needs of all students.
  • Design lesson plans that incorporate multiple strategies that aid students in building foundational literacy skills while using picture books.
  • Discover reading and picture book resources available to them through professional books, websites and state resources.
  • Effectively address CCSS on a regular basis and reflect on the progress and benefits of the standards.

What Are the Assignments and Projects?

Educators can enroll in the Picture Book Power course at any time and take up to one year from the registration date to complete all assignments. Modules within the course include:

  • Understanding the Role of Picture Books and the CCSS
  • Discovering Picture Books and Resources
  • Discovering New Authors
  • Multicultural Picture Books
  • Teaching With Picture Books
