How can teachers get students to drive the car instead of merely being a passenger? How do educators motivate students? These are sometimes challenging questions that are central to teaching in the 21st century. Motivation is not finite. It is not a matter of 'having it or not.' Motivation is cultivated. This course explores the idea that teachers can help guide students to own their learning through curriculum, instructional methods as well as a positive classroom environment. Let's get more students to learn that they don't 'get' grades, they earn them! This class is not designed for you to change everything you do! Through this course, you can hopefully recognize the practices you're already doing that develop student ownership of their learning but also brainstorm, share and discover new methods that help all students!

NOTE: Required book must be acquired separately.

For the past 11 years, I have consistently found new challenges as an educator that range from numerous subjects to teach such as Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, American history and Civics to developing a charitable high school club with my wife and 150 students. I try my best to use the everyday challenges of teaching to be a good role model for my students as well as my own children. To me, teaching is much more than just the content. It's about teaching young people to learn from both successes and failures. Through FPU, I hope to learn from students and fellow teachers just as much as they can learn from me. My goal is to have collaborative, relevant, and useful courses for teachers to build on the great job many are already doing!
