What is Google Certified Educator Level 1?

This course, Google Certified Educator Level 1 (GCEL1), is for students who want to pass the GCEL1 exam to become certified and expand their skills and knowledge on using Google applications to improve instruction, communication, and personal productivity. The organization Google for Education created the GCEL1 program. It applies to all teachers and other professional developers working with fellow educators to enhance their skills in using Google tools and applying them to the classroom setting.

Certification requires going through Google for Education’s online tutorial and passing the GCEL1 exam. The applications covered in this course include Documents, Sheets, Slides, Forms, Sites, Calendar, Search, Keep, Gmail, Chrome, and YouTube. Tutorials and assignments include learning ways to engage students, individualizing instruction, using the flipped classroom instructional model, and teaching digital literacy. You will learn ways to streamline your workflow, improve communication, and use collaborative features in the applications. This course supports national, state, and local standards and does not require a classroom of students.

Who is the Google Certified Educator Level 1 (GCEL1) course for?

  1. Those who WANT to become a Google Certified Educator Level 1
  2. Those who currently ARE Google Certified Educator Level 1 certified and would like to obtain graduate-level professional development credits (2-3 units)

The Fresno Pacific University course, GCEL1, extends beyond passing the exam and prepares you to provide professional development to other educators whether it is through workshops or peer coaching. This is accomplished, in part, by learning the unique nature of adult learners and what teaching strategies are most effective. GCLE1 is applicable to all teachers and other professional developers who will be working with fellow educators to enhance their skills in using Google tools and applying them to the classroom setting.

What will you learn in the Google Certified Educator Level 1 course?

Online resources that support the course content and encourage investigation will be available throughout the course assignments. Active hyperlinks are provided and will link to the appropriate information. These include videos, podcasts, worksheets, online activities, journal articles and other resources. The curriculum focuses on learning Google tools including:

In this PD course, learn to demonstrate your ability to use Google tools and be able to select the appropriate application for a given task. Use your new skills to prepare for the Google Certified Educator Level 1 exam!

Professional Development Unit Options

Educators have the option to earn either 2 or 3 graduate-level professional development units. Two graduate-level PD units will be earned to prepare you for the certification exam. You may earn a third graduate-level unit by completing hands-on assignments using Google Apps, including Calendar, Documents Forms, and Groups. Tutorials and assignments focus on online communication and interactions. These apps will streamline communication, including creating groups, inviting people to events, sharing a calendar, and collaborating on a document.

This course supports national, state, and local standards and does not require a classroom of students.

Professional Development Certificate

This course is applicable towards the Online Teaching Certificate and Technology Skills for Educators Certificate.
