This course helped me see Pinterest as more than just a place to collect ideas. It can be a meaningful tool in the classroom. Before this course, I had not used Pinterest with students, but now I have a better understanding of how it can support learning. I learned that Pinterest helps students build thinking skills like recognizing important details, sorting information, and reflecting on what they learn. These skills are part of the cognitive structures we studied, and they really help students make sense of what they’re learning. The most valuable lesson for me was about giving students more control. When they organize and label content in their own way, it helps them think more deeply. I want to bring more of this into my teaching, especially when we focus on reading and writing skills like character analysis or theme. My favorite assignment was designing a lesson plan that uses Pinterest. It helped me connect everything from the course and gave me something I can really use with my students next year.

It took me a while to get through the course for personal reasons but overall I liked the class. I did find that at times I was repeating myself in assignments but that seemed to be what was wanted. I loved the textbook that was used and will use it as a resource in my classroom.

This class was disguised as a course about how to develop a professional learning network via Pinterest and how to use the app in an educational setting. The first few assignments certainly helped me gain the PLN portion of the description, but the rest of the class was completely off track. There were two books initially needed for this course. After I had purchased the books and it was too late to return them, I was emailed by the instructor informing me that they had changed the syllabus and that I now only needed one of the books. The book used for this course is about cognitive development and from 2007. The education world has changed quite a bit since then! The connections the instructors tried to make to Pinterest are an extreme stretch and not very practical. This course may be good for a beginning teacher who isn’t really interested in learning about Pinterest and how to connect it with their classroom, but rather how to help their students build their cognitive structure.

If you want to know the direction of education, take this class. It is a great start to creating your PLN: personal learning network. Warning: This is not a pinning class, but a class of how to help you and your students pin ideas. Be prepared to work: lots of reading, written responses, three lesson plans, and don't buy the book on Kindle unless you have a 3rd generation or higher (you will need actual page to site sources for your final paper). Instructors are very helpful and knowledgeable!
