Content Comprehension: Helping Students Read & Understand
What is the Content Comprehension Course?
This content comprehension course helps teachers understand the struggling reader. The course offers practical strategies that help students succeed with reading in their content area classes. Teachers apply these strategies in the classroom with the reading material they are already using, helping students to understand, make connections and ultimately succeed within their content area classes.

This online, standards-based course focuses on a variety of strategies for content area teachers to help students read and understand their curriculum. Teachers learn practical, hands-on strategies for helping their students comprehend course textbooks. They also have the opportunity to design activities and create learning opportunities in their classroom, while delivering standards-based curriculum for their specific discipline
What Are the Assignments and Projects?
The reading comprehension course is divided into several learning modules:
- Do I Really Have to Teach Reading?
- Comprehensive and Connections
- Building Comprehension with Modeling
- Reading Widely with Text Sets
- Reading and Writing with Journals
- Reading and Assessment
- Addressing the Standards
In addition, students participate in a welcome module and a course wrap-up module.
This course is strongly aligned with the standards established by the National Council of Teachers of English as well as the Common Core State Standards. The assignments are designed to help teachers implement the objectives of the standards in their own classrooms.
