This is a fascinating course, if you want to incorporate film and movie clips into your ELA classroom. I learned a ton of movie terminology and teaching tips to translate film into my teaching. I took off a star because this course was more work than the other courses I've taken at Fresno.

This course fundamentally changed the way I think about using films in the ELA classroom. Even though some aspects of the text are dated, the content is directly relevant to current pedagogy. This course had me thinking about ways to use film clips and full films much the same way as a novel, in a way that students will find engaging and educational.

I've never really understood how to use movies meaningfully in the classroom and so I mostly avoided using movies at all. I almost never showed movie clips. This class has given me the tools and understanding I need to feel confident I can use the analysis of movie clips and entire movies in my classroom to the students' benefit. I'm not just confident; I'm excited.

I highly recommend this course to any ELA educator! The course offers rich insight into teaching visual literacy; it curates a marriage between literature and film that allows students to dive into their reading experiences with an arsenal of tools they didn't have when exclusively looking at the text. My teaching of literature has become more nuanced and engaging with this course. :)

Film and Literacy was an excellent course that gave me quite a bit of strategy and material to take to my classroom. It's true: kids love movie time in the Language Arts class, but when the lights go out many students tune out. This course presented numerous strategies to keep kids engaged in their film study. It also shed light for me, personally, on many strategies employed in film making so not only can we as a class analyze plot, setting, character, etc, but also the directorial choices and how they impacted the overall product. Thank you!

This has been one of the most enjoyable online courses I have taken! As a librarian, I don't teach regular classes. But this year I decided to add to each of the four different grade-level books clubs I lead a 'movie month' where we will spend about two weeks of lunchtimes watching a movie that corresponds to a book we are reading. Of all the online classes I have ever taken, I truly feel I have garnered the most 'takeaways' with this class that I can directly apply to student learning. I look forward to using these tools next month!

I absolutely loved this course! It has broadened my thinking about film and will certainly enrich my teaching. I enjoyed reading John Golden's vibrant and practical text READING IN THE DARK and will put into practice many of his ideas. (I share his taste in films.) I recommended the text to a former student who will be teaching a film class this fall, and she has already ordered her copy. Thank you to my professor, Elaine Reimer-Paré, whose insightful comments I have valued (for two courses now). I will recommend this class to some of my teaching colleagues. Sharon
