With student reading scores declining and attention challenges rising nationwide, many teachers are reexamining the role of technology in the classroom. This course explores practical strategies for creating more focused, connected, and intentional learning experiences with reduced reliance on screens.

Through research, reflection, and practical application, educators will explore how analog learning experiences can improve cognitive engagement, social interaction, and long-term learning habits. Drawing on current neuroscience and educational research, including themes from The Digital Delusion, participants will examine how excessive screen-based instruction may contribute to fractured attention, reduced comprehension, and the erosion of deep thinking and human connection in schools. Participants will evaluate when technology enhances learning and when simpler, low-tech approaches may be more effective for supporting attention, comprehension, creativity, and classroom culture. The course also invites educators to reflect on their own technology habits and consider how intentional changes can strengthen both teaching and learning experiences.

NOTE: The required book must be acquired separately.

This course is applicable towards the Curriculum Design and Assessment Certificate.

Instructor
I believe that teachers are the backbone of society, and that education plays a major role in shaping a culture’s values. I made a career change to education after four years of active duty in the army and two years working in aircraft. For the past 25-30 years, I have had the privilege of teaching in a variety of settings in public and private schools, charter schools, and over half of my career teaching overseas in international settings. My educational interests include integrated curriculum development, art instruction, classroom climate, teacher care, educational technology, and Biblical integration.
