I highly recommend this course! It was applicable to various age levels and skill levels. It helped give fresh ideas to my Animal Studies elective as well as helped supplement a few activities in both my Biology and AP Biology courses! I enjoyed the process of trying new activities and allowing students the opportunity to try something different. I look forward to the next course!

There were several ways in which the course SCI-903: Animals helped to further teaching and learning in my classes. Beyond this, the depth and breadth of my capacity as a science educator grew more than I had initially anticipated. By thinking through the planning required to make each resource work for my own students, it became a lesson for me to be as realistic as possible in what my students could and not handle- and how far they could be pushed to reach the full depth of the standard presented to them. A lot of what I learned was how to do something “better” rather than how to do something new. For example, my understanding of the CCC (cross-cutting concepts) in science became a lot better, to the point that I feel much more comfortable planning my own lessons in the future around these concepts. I have now come to assume it was intentional in the choice of materials for 903, but I was continuously pleasantly surprised/wondering throughout my preparation, delivery, and reflection whether the links provided were meant to align so closely with the SEP, DCI, and CCC all at once. I broke out of the siloed concept of simply teaching the same things I had taught year after year and began to contextualize student learning as part of their broader learning experience across the Common Core. For example, before this course I hadn’t realized the importance of mathematics in general and probability specifically in making connections from modern species to evolutionary antecedents in history. I also had not realized how much literacy was tackled by my own lessons already, in an embedded way through unstated supporting standards. Speaking on standards broadly, I actually was surprised how little I had known about the NGSS curriculum which I taught for three years. I found myself looking up the standards progression to the point of beginning to memorize it. It is easy to set oneself up as a teacher to teach the same thing, answer the same questions, and tell the same story or narrative from one lesson to the next- rather than allowing for students to direct that discussion, or even just to have additional inputs from professional developments, or coursework such as 903. I greatly appreciate all that Professor Harms and this course have done to help me better help my students, thank you!
