What is the Teaching Golf course?

The Teaching Golf course will prepare you to teach golf to yourself, small groups and your entire class. Participants in the course will learn to create an effective golf curriculum or program for teachers and coaches. Although golf is a game of physical skill, it is also one of the more mentally demanding sports. An added benefit of this course will be the improvement participants will notice in their own game.

Who is the Teaching Golf online course for?

The Teaching Golf course is designed for K - 14 teachers who would like to gain a solid foundation in the game of golf. This course will allow those seeking more knowledge on golf safety, strategies to teach in the classroom, ways to implement golf into a physical education program, and ways to instruct the fundamental skills and strategies of golf will benefit greatly.

What will you learn in this online PD course for coaches and PE teachers?

Teaching golf is designed to make maximum use of your time. The readings, videotapes, magazines, rules book and workbook will give you a broad understanding of the rules and mechanics of golf in a short amount of time. These resources, along with directed drill, practice and play, prepare you to teach golf to yourself, small groups and entire classes. The emphasis is on the development of classroom and driving range lesson plans which will enable students to evaluate and increase their own golf skills. Covered in the course are:

  • Basic and intermediate skills
  • Rules of the game
  • Etiquette
  • Ways to overcome the psychological challenges of golf

National Standards

The curriculum is based on cognitive, psychomotor, and behavioral developmental changes of students from kindergarten through high school. It is aligned to two national standards:

  • National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS)
  • National PE Standards

Carla Shearer

Instructor
Carla Shearer has been in education her whole adult life.  Carla earned her degree from the University of New Mexico, majoring in Physical Education with a Biology minor.  Carla also played on the women’s golf team for the Lobos.  Later she earned her master in education administration from the University of San Francisco. She began her career teaching at a private school in Fresno, CA and from there she went to Fresno Pacific University where she taught physical education and health classes as well as supervised student teachers.  She started the women’s basketball program at Fresno Pacific and was the first coach. Carla is also an accomplished writer where her poems and short stories have been in publications such as Stories for the Heart. Carla’s passion is golf and plays as much as time allows.  She is a USGTF professional golf instructor and gets great satisfaction out of seeing people improve their golf game. Carla is married to Roland Shearer and have two grown children and one granddaughter.
