I enjoyed this course and am excited to continue exploring the use of graphic novels in the 6th grade ELA classroom. It has opened my eyes to the wide-ranging possibilities for incorporating them in meaningful and academically rigorous ways. While I’ve always recognized graphic novels as excellent gateway reads for striving readers and enjoyable “brain break” books for more advanced students, I now have a deeper, research-backed understanding of their educational value. I feel much more confident advocating for their use, as I can now speak to their role in promoting visual literacy, critical thinking, and student engagement with complex themes and texts.
