I really enjoyed Poetry in the English Classroom. It was very rewarding to take a long look at what I already do with poetry and what I can do with it after taking this class and focusing on Somers' book and the works of Langston Hughes. The class connected poetry to current topics, which I appreciated. The class also connected poetry to my own district standards which means I can cut out the middle man and not deal with Common Core Standards, which we rarely discuss at my school. Getting kids to talk about it, perform it, or write about it will remain in the forefront of my attention. Teaching poetry across curriculum is doubtful to be a joint effort on my end, but the focus on what the Internet has to offer was beneficial. Thank you!

This course provided a helpful framework to consider new ways to teach poetry, new poems to incorporate in your curriculum, etc. The primary textbook is somewhat outdated, however, and some of the resources referenced within it are no longer in print or easily accessible.

I found the text interesting, but I didn't see the point in the forum posting. It didn't produce any dialogue among the class members. Seemed like busy work. I found the sites in the textbook and the NCTE author collections to be very helpful and inspirational in terms of lesson ideas etc.

I liked the class a lot. My only suggestion would be to use a more up-to-date textbook. The main text was good, but didn't take advantage of the wealth of new teaching options made possible with technology. The assignments were reasonable and useful, and I had no problem completing it during the summer. Overall, I liked it a lot. I will use the lessons I developed once the school year begins! :)
