Murder & Mayhem in the Bible
Instructor: Dr. Lynn Jost
Stories of divine violence and human brutality overwhelm the Old Testament reader. Murder and vengeance are part of the human story. God punishes human violence with destructive acts that disrupt nature. God orders humans to annihilate people in judgment. Murder and mayhem characterize both the ungodly and anointed godly leaders. Cain and Abel, David and Goliath, Egyptians, Philistines, and Canaanites, flood, fire, and earthquake, Elijah and Elisha, Gideon and Samson contribute to the violent tale. From the theological perspective that God purposes to bring peace and justice, this class will analyze how readers can appreciate biblical tales of murder and mayhem.
