This course provides an overview of the basic tools and expertise necessary to effectively serve today's school, public, special and academic library communities. Current practices and policies, an awareness of the historical foundations and the essential skills and dispositions required to offer library service to patrons will be emphasized. The course prepares the support staff to meet the library competencies as listed in the syllabus and will allow professionals to update and enhance their library competencies. Assignments will be general, but students may specialize in a particular library type by tailoring their work to fit a library of interest. Required text must be purchased separately.
