This course has been designed to help teachers discover the excitement of using children's literature to teach mathematics. A great story can often become a springboard for teaching or reinforcing a mathematical concept. This linking of mathematics and literacy effectively enhances children's learning in all related curriculum areas. In this course, teachers will read the texts and will research methodologies and ideas from other sources as well. Using these ideas and sample lessons, teachers will learn to design and teach activities and lessons appropriate for their grade levels. A great number of Internet resources highlight the integration of literature and mathematics. The interdisciplinary approach in this course and all of the assignments are built upon the principles and standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the National Council of Teachers of English, and the International Reading Assn. Teachers may complete this course with or without students.
